One Day My Soul Just Opened Up
“This remarkable book shows us a new path to attuning ourselves to
the world of spirit. Toby gives us a beautifully written guide to
the undiscovered country of transcendence through movement. Many of
us learn early on to run away from our lives; Toby’s book provides
a way to get back home by running deeply into our lives, and by so doing,
to find the highest and best in ourselves.”

“As a life coach and physical trainer who understands and reads the
body as a manifestation of the way that the mind works, I believe in the
martial arts axiom that ‘the body follows the spirit and the spirit
follows the body’. I find again and again that literally, ‘where
your mind is,’ there your body is also. These meditations will
help your mind to find that place of inner peace and focus that will hold
your body in a new place—where running will become more like floating
than exertion. And the images that pass around you will be colored
by your relaxed mental state, elevating your running into meditation.”

like Aesop’s Fables. In
today’s complex times, having this down to earth, yet spiritual perspective
will help you to make your life more of what you want it to be.”

"Estler's honesty and energy are contagious. While becoming healthier on the outside, why not address the rest?" (Article here )
I found Toby Estler’s book to be a wonderful addition to my desire to read good, inspirational books. This is a runner’s guide for preparing for running, mentally, physically, and spiritually. It is also a guide for everyday living and working. Mr. Estler has an extensive and diverse set of experiences he brings to the reader; he has lived what he talks about. He has learned how to start and how to persevere, something many people today could learn. His writing is clearly from the heart and is easy to read and be inspired by.
Mr. Estler’s journey serves as a roadmap that is not only easy to follow, but easy to begin, which is where we need to be. In terms of physical fitness, running has clearly proven its value. By having the mental and spiritual pieces in place, this can only be a win-win. I really recommend “Running Home” and emphasize that while the focus is on running, the theme applies to everything we do in life.
Today, his jail cell seems a long way away. But one summer’s day, 15 years ago, author and runner Toby Estler was looking out of a jail cell in England’s infamous Wormwood Scrubs Prison. Craning against the barred window, he was just able to see the corner of a large expanse of grass beyond the prison walls. Estler describes, “Compared to the drab grays that permeated my cell, the grass looked more than alive—it seemed to represent life itself. I closed my eyes and imagined running across the park, breathing hard, free to roam.”
In that moment, Estler made a promise to himself, “When I get out of here, I’m going to make the most of very day that I can.”
Now he has shared this inspirational journey—and many of the powerful life mastery skills that have made it possible—in a new book, Running Home: 35 Moving Meditations for Runners. It weaves together a strikingly honest personal journey, a love of running, and 35 inspirational life skills that are also being adapted by walkers, cyclists, mountain climbers, swimmers, and even those who do not have an exercise regime . . . yet! And Estler’s wife, a licensed MFT, is finding it is inspiring her clients too.
To Estler, a former 60-a-day smoker, alcoholic, and drug user, running even a mile seemed a tall order. But one mile became five; five became ten; ten became a first marathon. Over the last 15 years, running has been the foundation upon which he has built a new life: a life as a husband, father, author, seminar leader, and business consultant, as well as earning a Master’s degree in Psychology.
So often, the path to renewal and reinvention begins with physical movement—with getting outside for fresh air, a new perspective, and the outer space to reflect the inner space we seek. This book is filled with inspirational quotes, very personal reflections on a remarkable journey, and practical, easy to follow guidelines on how to make exercise a powerful agent of change. It’s available at all the regular bookstores and Estler also offers a blog.
